The archive
What am I searching?
The archive tab searches 324,635 OCR text segments across four corpora: Charlevoix-area newspapers (301,820 segments — the Charlevoix County Herald, Charlevoix Courier, and neighboring papers; dated issues run 1902–2009, though most segments come from bound volumes that carry no per-issue date), the Beaver Beacon (1,021 segments, 1955–1974 so far), books (20,812 segments from imprints dated 1850–2025, largely via the Internet Archive), and captured island websites (982 segments, snapshots dated 2002–2014). A hit is a segment — the OCR pipeline splits each document's text on paragraph boundaries near 3 kB and keeps no page markers, so results point to a source file rather than a page number; the file path shown under each hit is the segment's provenance in the collection. Fuzzy matching (on by default) tolerates OCR errors and variant spellings — Gallaher finds Gallagher. The collection is still growing toward its ~124,000-page target, so counts rise as more issues are transcribed.
