Summary

Farrand and Bell’s 1982 Quaternary Geology of Michigan is the held statewide surficial-geology map that supplies the interpretive parent for the project’s modern Quaternary map layers. Its legend distinguishes the glacial and postglacial materials relevant to the Beaver Island archipelago, including dune and lacustrine deposits.

Evidence and limits

This is a regional map at 1:500,000. It supports the existence and regional mapping vocabulary of its legend units; it does not establish the material at a specific parcel, ridge, beach, excavation, or exposed shoreline. The project uses its more detailed collected GIS intersection for reproducible archipelago area calculations, and any site-level conclusion still requires appropriately scoped mapping or field evidence.

  1. Held statewide map distinguishes units including dune sand, lacustrine sand and gravel, lacustrine clay and silt, and several till and outwash classes. At 1:500,000 it supplies regional surficial-geology context, not a parcel-scale, exposure-scale, or present-condition determination for a particular island location.
