Summary

The August 1968 Beaver Beacon reported that John D. Murphy’s rented boat went missing from St. James Harbor during strong northwest winds. The boat was found overturned off the north end of Garden Island the next day; Coast Guard helicopters, private planes, volunteers, and a shore search found boat debris but no sign of Murphy, who was presumed drowned at publication.

Evidence and limits

This is a newspaper accident and search report. It records the source’s “presumed drowned” status without inferring a confirmed death, and does not provide an official incident report, chart, or later recovery record.
