Summary

On 13 May 2004, more than 150 people attended the Beaver Island Lighthouse School’s spring completion and graduation ceremony at the KC Hall in Charlevoix. Ten seniors received diplomas, and eighteen other students received recognition and awards for completing the spring semester.

Significance

The ceremony is a concrete record of the school’s diploma-granting work and of the community surrounding the south-end campus. Students presented poetry, music and song; Island residents crossed by boat to attend. Four students received scholarships to the Bear River Writers Conference. The program also recognized John Freeman for more than 27 years of work connecting the Lighthouse School, summer programs and restoration of the light station.

The article reports a public ceremony, not a complete graduation register or student outcome study.

Open questions

  • Which school or district issued the diplomas, and what accreditation or credit-transfer arrangements governed them?
  • Do ceremony programs, photographs or school records identify all graduates and award recipients?
