Map: detail of the Beaver Island south end showing walked GPS tracks against
The south end trails, walked and mappedDrawn from the archive's own data in EPSG:3078. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL 1.0); relief USGS 3DEP 2018 1 m bare-earth lidar (public domain); walked tracks by M. Bommarito, 2024-25. · CC BY 4.0 for the drawing; underlying data under its own terms (see credit)

The detail frame where the archive’s only ground truth is. Twelve runs totalling 6.55 km were walked at tread pace in 2024-25 and are absent from OpenStreetMap; five further runs were searched slowly and no tread was found, recorded so the same ground is not searched twice.

A negative here is evidence about one walk, not proof that no trail exists.

Open questions

  • Have any of the twelve GPS-walked runs missing from OpenStreetMap been submitted to OSM, closing the published-but-unmapped gap for those segments?
  • Do any of the five runs searched with no tread found correspond to a route named in a print source, such as a Beacon article or a township trail map, that this ground survey should be reconciled against?

If you can answer any of these, or correct anything above, the archive wants to hear it — see Corrections.
