HISTORICAL WALKING TOUR – U.S. LIFE SAVING/COAST GUARD STATION Stop 10: The U.S. Life Saving Station was started at this location in 1876. The Life Saving Service later became the U.S. Coast Guard. Originally, the Station Chief, the sole employee, worked with local fishermen. They volunteered their services and became the busiest crew in the nation given the fact that the station was the leading commercial fishing center in the Great Lakes. The U.S. Coast Guard operated the station between 1922 and 1972. The crew barracks, now the St. James Township Hall, was built in 1933. The boat house, now the Central Michigan University Boathouse, was built in 1939. Pierre Beaver salutes the U.S. Coast Guard for their awesome service. He knows all being in the water and tending to families. To continue the walking tour, go back toward the Post Office and walk up Gallagher Avenue, where Pierre will introduce you to the start of the last seven stops on this tour.
