Font Lake Boat Launch HISTORICAL DRIVING TOUR - FONT LAKE During the 1840s, Mormon followers of James Strang named this lake Font Lake. Baptisms were performed on the point across the lake from this public access. They also held their annual feasts and other gatherings here. An 1852 Mormon map showed the settlement, Fontville, between this location and Lake Michigan to the North. Jephtha's Castle, the largest house on the island at that time, was located on Lake Michigan in Fontville. Even though the Mormons were on the island for only a short period of time (1847-1856), they began two ambitious projects to drain inland lakes. They dug a drainage ditch from the north shore of Font Lake westward to Lake Michigan to allow water to flow into the mud flats. They also started a canal from Lake Geneserath to Lake Michigan to allow water to flow into the big lake. Neither project was completed. In the summer of 2019, due to extremely high water and potential flooding, St. James Township was granted a DEQ permit to construct a control structure to connect Font Lake to an existing ditch system to lower the lake level. A similar plan had been implemented 30 years earlier. Font Lake is known for excellent canoeing and kayaking. Panfish and largemouth bass are abundant. It is also a protected Common loon habitat.
