WE MAKE THE HEADLINES If Only Everyday Was Skip Day 1946 Wednesday, May 3, the seniors, Bertha McDonough, Catherine Schmidt, Barbara Nackerman, Katherine Ricksgers, Mary Margaret La Freniere and Mary Margaret Martin and Laurence Malloy, of Beaver Island took a well-deserved skip day. The former students of St. James High School, Vera McDonough, Erwin Belfy, Robert Malloy and Bussy LaFreniere accompanied the graduates. Fred Korthase and Bussy LaFreniere used their cars as transportation. At 11 o'clock the happy group started up the East side of the Island. Their first stop was at Nomads where they all tried their hand at fishing. Laurence Malloy, seeing better prospects on the other side of the stream tried jumping across it, but to the sorrow of all he landed in the mud. Then, they all proceeded to Lake Genesareth where a fire was made for roasting weiners. Before moving on several pictures were taken of the group. Their next stop was at the lighthouse and then on down to the new fire tower where many of the gang climbed to the top but because of some ailment the rest stuck to the ground. After leaving the fire tower Mary Margaret LaFreniere insisted on going to see Tony Wojan's lumber camp. Leddy Wojan and Buddy Left were busy loading lumber but stopped to give them all a hearty welcome. There was a little Shetland pony at the camp and Catherine Schmidt tried riding it but because it wouldn't go she thought her 70 pounds was too much for it. The jolly gang picked flowers. They then started for home. They ended their lovely day by going to a show and dance at the Shamrock.
