Summary

Ethel Mielke McCann was identified in January 1974 as the wife of Roland J. McCann in a notice of their 50th wedding anniversary. The notice says the couple married at Holy Cross Church on December 11, 1923 and had formerly lived on Beaver Island. A Clarke Historical Library transcription of the 1910 St. James census lists five-year-old Ethel D. Mielke in the Gustav and Mary Mielke household, supporting a circa-1905 birth.

Evidence and limits

The census age supports only a circa-1905 birth year and is not an exact birth record. The sources do not supply Ethel’s death date, full civil identity, or a marriage certificate.

  3. Transcribes the 1910 St. James Township household of Gustav and Mary Mielke, including Michigan-born daughter Ethel D., age 5. The distinctive maiden name, island location, and subsequent 1923 marriage notice make this a probable identification with Ethel Mielke McCann. A census age permits only an approximate 1905 birth year, not an exact date.
