The passenger steamer James E. Sanford seen from astern under way, her stern lettered “JAMES E. SANFORD” over the hailing port “CHARLEVOIX.” Passengers and crew stand at the after rail below a single tall funnel; davits and a boat are rigged over the after deck, and an ensign flies from a staff.

  1. Verified by opening the file: the transom lettering reads JAMES E. SANFORD / CHARLEVOIX, and no third-party watermark appears. The Sanford held the Charlevoix–Beaver Island run from 1920 to 1930 and is reported as the first vessel on it to carry cars. The gallery gives no photographer, date or place.
