Summary
Leverett and Taylor’s 1915 USGS monograph is a foundational regional account of Great Lakes Pleistocene history, former shorelines, lake stages, and isostatic tilt. It remains an important historiographical anchor for the later regional studies used to interpret the Beaver Island archipelago’s beach-ridge and shoreline setting.
Evidence and limits
The monograph provides regional framework rather than an island-by-island field record. Its lake-stage terminology cannot be assigned to a named Beaver Island ridge without a source that supplies that ridge’s location, elevation, and dating evidence.
