Summary
This 1899 federal annual report continues the Fish Commission’s documented interest in Beaver Island lake-trout spawning grounds. It reports that those grounds received particular attention in planning, but names collection stations elsewhere and does not claim that eggs were collected at Beaver Island.
What the report records
The Commission placed spawn-takers at Pilot Harbor, Cockburn Island, Meldrum Bay, Burnt Island, Green Island, and Duck Island. Severe weather limited net lifting and the fishing season closed just as spawning became substantial; the report says that, with ten to twelve more operating days, large collections could have been made particularly at Beaver Island.
The same report’s later distribution table lists 3,000,000 whitefish fry and fingerlings for “Lake Michigan, Beaver Island, Mich.” That table entry is modeled separately from the lake-trout planning account: it does not establish local collection, a hatchery, a release site, or a continuous stocking program.
Evidence and limits
The report is a region-wide management account. It supports planning attention, seasonal timing, and the agency’s counterfactual assessment—not a Beaver Island collection, hatchery, fish-stock measurement, or fishing-industry output.
