Summary

The Christmas 1957 Beaver Beacon reported that more than 200 big-game hunters visited Beaver Island during the last two weeks of November, including 30 Islanders. The Conservation Department’s reported tally was 107 legally killed deer, including 64 antlered bucks, plus one coyote and one fox. The notice thanked Game Biologist Jerry Dunderdeck for conducting the deer survey and assisting hunters, with Dick McNeil taking over during the final week. The February 1958 issue separately reports 262 hunters and 107 deer taken, giving a reported 40.8 percent kill rate and calling it the best percentage in the state.

Evidence and limits

These are newspaper-reported hunting and survey figures, not a held kill register or agency dataset. The source does not provide survey methods, licenses, a biological dataset, or independent agency documentation.
