Summary
After April snow and east winds prolonged winter, the Coast Guard icebreaker Acacia arrived at Beaver Island on April 10, 2003. About 25 people and several dogs watched it cut through the foot-thick ice, after which Islanders and schoolchildren gathered at the ferry dock to welcome the channel-opening vessel. The May issue also records community thanks for the early opening and says a minor bump against the Emerald Isle was repairable.
