Summary
The April 1997 Beaver Beacon announced “Expedition ’97,” a planned return to the wreck of the Carl D. Bradley, which sank in a Lake Michigan storm on November 18, 1958. Northrop Grumman’s SM@2000 laser line-scan system was to be paired with the University of Michigan’s M-ROVER remote-operated vehicle for deep-water visual and electronic documentation.
The wreck was described as lying in about 330 feet of water, 62 miles from Charlevoix. The mission also aimed to investigate the historical question of whether the ship broke apart before sinking. Frank Mays, one of the two survivors, was expected to participate, while CBS News Magazine and the Associated Press were expected to document the mission.
Evidence limits
This is a contemporary expedition announcement. It does not establish that the planned mission occurred, nor does it provide the expedition’s later findings.
