Summary
Dick Burris’s retrospective recounts a 1976 attempt to salvage the Chandler Wells centerboard and centerboard well from a barge abandoned near Whiskey Island shoal. After an initial water-drum lift and tow failed, Jewell Gillespie’s tug American Girl completed the recovery and brought the object to Beaver Island for shipment to Charlevoix.
Evidence limits
This is a first-person retrospective explicitly described as incomplete. It does not establish an exact date, full participant list, vessel registry, salvage permit, or independent outcome record.
