Summary

Beaver Island’s 1994 Fourth of July carried the parade theme “Beaver Island Wildlife Awareness.” Rain forced the Chamber of Commerce to cancel the carnival and move the craft show to that August’s Homecoming, but the parade went ahead with 26 entries and the evening fireworks were carried out as planned.

Program

The July 1994 Beacon announced the parade theme, “Beaver Island Wildlife Awareness,” forming at 12:30 pm across from the Medical Center with a 1:00 pm start, tied to a concurrent Chamber-run Wildlife Club membership drive. The same issue previewed the Fourth of July Carnival (seeking volunteers through Pam O’Brien) and two raffles: a standard buck-a-ticket drawing of a donated fawn poster, and a $50-a-ticket, 200-ticket “Big One” raffle for a fully-chartered two-week trip for two to Ireland. Rain on the day itself canceled the carnival outright (“the completely reworked signs and games” came back down) and pushed the craft show to the August 13 Homecoming, but the parade proceeded with 26 “waterproof” entries, named in the Beacon: groups including the Boy Scouts of Port St. James, Cub Scouts, King Strang Hotel Club, Veterans, McDonough’s Market, the B.I. Volunteer Fire Department, Central Michigan University, and others. The evening fireworks display went off as scheduled, credited to Bill McDonough, John Gillespie, and their crew. The Chamber of Commerce thanked its members “for their hard work — wet or dry.”

Independently of the celebration itself, the ferry Beaver Islander suffered a marine-gear failure on June 28, six days before the holiday, forcing the Beaver Island Boat Company to run the South Shore on a triple-daily schedule and add the 150-passenger cruiser Voyageur for two extra Independence Day round trips until the Islander returned to service on July 7.

Evidence limits

The August reports are contemporary post-event accounts, not attendance or financial records; no proceeds figure survives for the Wildlife Club membership drive, the Ireland raffle, or the carnival that had to be canceled. The ferry breakdown is documented as surrounding context for the holiday weekend, not as part of the celebration’s own program.
