Summary
Beaver Island held an unjudged Fourth of July parade on July 4, 2000, with roughly forty entries playing on the turn of the millennium, organized by the Beaver Island Chamber of Commerce (parade), the Beaver Island Youth Consortium (carnival), and the Holy Cross Altar Society (bake sale). For the first time, the two townships rather than the Chamber funded and ran that year’s fireworks display.

June 2000 township board minutes record a change in how the fireworks were funded and run: Peaine Township’s minutes state plainly, “The Chamber will no longer be involved with the fireworks. The two Townships will donate $2,000 each,” and St. James Township’s minutes confirm its own matching $2,000 appropriation, adding “The Townships will be in charge of fireworks for this year.” The parade and carnival themselves continued under the Chamber of Commerce (parade) and Beaver Island Youth Consortium (carnival), per the Beacon’s own summer calendar, with the Holy Cross Altar Society running a bake sale the same day. The August report on the parade itself notes there were no judges that year, but singles out several entries: the Tidmore, Montebella, and Dubey families’ “International Express” (with participants “from as far away as Hong Kong”), Hodgson Enterprises’s International Award-winning entry with employees “from four continents,” the O’Briens’ “Emerald City,” Central Michigan University’s Millennium-themed critters, and the Evans family’s “Music Across the Millennium.” Roughly thirty-five further entries are named, including the Beaver Island Fire Department and EMS, a group of named war veterans, 2000 golf champion Jerry Sowa, and Eric Peterson again appearing as “Ambassador…from Hog Island.”
