Summary
The Beaver Island Chamber of Commerce hosted a Fourth of July parade on July 4, 2002, under the theme “Honoring Those Who Serve and Protect,” honoring police, firefighters, EMS personnel, and the armed forces in the first Independence Day after the September 11 attacks. Two Michigan Air National Guard F-16s flew over the parade, followed by an Island Airways “Missing Man” formation, and a ceremony on the veterans’ return route read the names of the missing.
Program
The Chamber Board selected the “Honoring Those Who Serve and Protect” theme and secured, through State Senator Phil Hoffman’s request to the Air National Guard, a scheduled F-16 flyover timed to the parade’s start. Don Vyse, that year’s Citizen of the Year, served as Grand Marshal. New curbs on part of Main Street forced a new starting route, from the corner of Forest Street and King’s Highway (across from the Emerald Isle Hotel) downhill toward the bay and left onto Main; “Over 50 floats and groups of marchers” took part, including the police, fire department, EMS, tap-dancers, horseback and mini-bike riders, and groups singing “Born in the USA.” A ceremony on the marching veterans’ return trip read the names of the missing followed by a moment of silence. The Beaver Island Youth Consortium again ran the carnival, held that year on the Rectory lawn, with crafter tables at $10 each. Evening fireworks ran until about 10:45 p.m., producing what the Beacon called an echo effect off the high land ringing the bay, followed by a large traffic jam leaving town.
Evidence limits
The August report is a vivid post-event narrative rather than a tallied program: it gives “Over 50” as an approximate float and marching-group count and does not name individual float winners or a total carnival or fireworks budget. Whether the F-16 flyover the Chamber requested in June was in fact the same flyover described in August is not separately confirmed by a military source; this article treats the Beacon’s own account as sufficient given the request’s timing and confirmation in the same year’s issues.

- Did the water-balloon element described as turning into “a wet T-shirt contest” recur in later years, or was 2002 an isolated incident?
