The parade
The same July 2010 issue carries a narrative recap, “The Annual Parade,” confirming the day ran as planned after an overcast morning gave way to clear, hot weather with a harbor breeze. The recap states that the parade itself “began as a part of Homecoming 78 years ago, but after diminishing enthusiasm threatened its continuation it was switched to July Fourth by Marge Wagner” — placing the switch at roughly 1932 by that arithmetic, though no specific year is given. The 2010 procession lined up on the Highway for a two o’clock cannon start: sheriff’s deputies, marching marines, striding servicemen (including new recruit Brett Maudrie), AmVets, and three fire trucks led the way, followed by an ambulance, jeeps, a USO truck, classic cars, and a Beaver Island Band of Odawa and Ottawa Indians float. At 2:12 p.m. the Island Airways fleet flew over in a Missing Man formation, followed later by a smoking biplane’s passes. Entries raised money for the Cottage for Karen project by locking people in a mock jail near the Print Shop until they were “bailed out.” Other entries included a Central Michigan University float, the Evans Clan’s bus, water-cannon and balloon dousing, an appearance by the vessel Medusa Challenger with one of its Beaver Island captains, Bud Left, costumed entries including superhero and political-figure impersonations, a live band towed by Rich Gillespie, a bagpiper, and Native American participants representing both local tribes within one family. The recap states the day closed with a “professional-grade fireworks show” after a dinner break. A September 2010 reader’s letter independently thanks a Gillespie “for pulling me out of the sand after the great (as usual) 4th of July parade,” incidental confirmation that the parade ran and was well regarded.
Aftermath and golf tournament
September 2010 Peaine Township meeting notes report that “the proceeds from the Carnival exceeded the costs, so the seed money could be carried over,” confirming Judy Boyle’s management ran at a surplus. The August 2010 issue separately reports the outcome of the associated Fourth of July golf tournament: course owner and manager John Works Jr., golfing with Carl Evans, Mike Bailey, Dave Schurburg, and Larry Roy, won the tournament following a playoff against a second team, both having carded a 32 in the alternate-shot format.
