Summary

The August 1956 Beaver Beacon reported the final field activity of the St. James Harbor dredging project. A below-depth area opposite the ferry dock produced parts of an old sunken ship and a large pond-net stake before the dredge cleared the area and departed.

Evidence and limits

This is the newspaper’s final field report, not a formal engineering completion file. The source does not identify the wreck, provide measurements or contract closeout, or establish a broader maritime archaeological interpretation.

Sources

  1. Reports Corps of Engineers representative Elmer Eckroad’s account that a survey found an area opposite the ferry dock below project depth; the dredge removed parts of an old sunken ship and a large pond-net stake, then cleared the area. It records the dredge’s July 14 departure, return during high seas, second departure, and the following day’s departure of the survey and inspection personnel. It does not provide engineering measurements, a formal completion certificate, contract closeout, or an identification of the shipwreck. The holding institution's portal restricts automated access; the archive holds a copy of this issue and can provide it on request.

  2. The held three-page issue scan is paired with the OCR source and confirms the final dredging report; it does not expand the engineering, shipwreck, or contract record.
