Summary
The April 2013 Beaver Beacon remembered the November 11, 1913 loss of the ore carrier Henry B. Smith off Marquette. Joan Gallagher Hansen described her grandfather John Gallagher, the ship’s chief engineer, whose body was the only one recovered, and connected the family to Beaver Island.
Evidence limits
This is a later family remembrance of a historical shipwreck. It preserves the newspaper’s account and does not replace maritime casualty records or establish every detail of the wreck and recovery.
