Softball. The 9th Annual Bud McDonough Memorial Softball Tourney, held “during Homecoming weekend.” Beaver Island went unbeaten across four games, defeating Diekevers Roofing (15-5), Nordic Bar of Boyne City (16-4), Paul Bunyan Lanes (10-3) and, in the final, Grey Gables of Charlevoix (10-7). Don Willis pitched and won all four games and was named MVP; Tom McDonough hit four home runs across the tournament; Tom Barnes of Diekevers Roofing was batting champion at .769. Other participating teams: Swanson’s K & D and Wojan-Chandler, both of Charlevoix. Needlework exhibit. The Beaver Island Historical Society ran a “Needlework Treasures, Past and Present” exhibit from August 1 through Homecoming, August 12.

Las Vegas Night. The August calendar lists Las Vegas Night for August 15, but no detailed program or outcome report appears in the held 1984 issues.

  • Was there a dance and dinner in 1984, simply unreported, or did the softball tournament effectively stand in for them that year?
  • Does the 9th-annual softball ordinal settle the 1975-vs-1976 tournament founding question raised in the hub article, or is it itself just as loosely counted as the 1976 “first annual” claim?
