Summary
The 1986 Beaver Island Homecoming weekend was calendared for August 8-9. A fireworks display planned for the weekend fell through when the sponsor could not obtain a Federal permit in time. The Bud McDonough Memorial softball tournament went ahead despite rain on two of its three days, with standings decided on Saturday’s play alone.
Program
Softball. The annual Bud McDonough Memorial tournament ran across the Homecoming weekend. Rain on Friday and Sunday forced the standings to rest on Saturday’s games only: McDonough’s Market finished undefeated in 1st place, Townhouse Bar took 2nd with a single loss, and Topside Cafe and Paul Bunyan Lanes shared 3rd.
Fireworks. Richard Gillespie sought a township-backed permit for a Homecoming weekend fireworks display. The timeline was too short to secure the required Federal authorization, and the display did not go forward that year.
No dinner, dance, or parade is reported for 1986 in the held issues.
Evidence limits
The August 1986 issue is a forward calendar and a permit request; the
September 1986 issue reports the softball result only. Neither issue names an
organizing body for the weekend as a whole, a venue for any dinner or dance,
or attendance figures, so carried_out_by and took_place_at are left
unset here rather than assumed from the general pattern described in the
hub article.
Open questions
- Was a dinner or dance held in 1986, and if so, where and under whose sponsorship? No held issue reports one.
- Did a fireworks display happen in a later year after the 1986 permit timing problem, and who resolved it?

- A printed calendar grid marks "HOMECOMING" and "WEEKEND" across August 8 and 9. The same issue reports that Richard Gillespie asked the township for a fireworks permit "for Homecoming this weekend," but that there was too little time to obtain the required Federal permit, so the request was not granted.
