Summary
The May 1997 issue reports above-average February precipitation, three inches of additional March precipitation, and a forecast that Lake Michigan would rise 24 inches above the long-term average by August, 15 inches above 1996. The expected effects included higher water on offshore rocks and narrower beaches. The August follow-up reports the July 1 level at 581.1 feet, eight inches below the 1986 all-time high and 20 inches above the long-term June average, with levels expected to remain high through December. The October follow-up says the level did not change during September. The November report puts it 22 inches above the long-term monthly average and 10 inches below the 1986 high, forecasting only a modest decline. The December report says the seasonal decline had begun and projected an April level four inches below the prior April reading.
