Summary
In the first “Know Your Neighbor” feature, Helen Hoffman Collar recalled her fiftieth Beaver Island summer and first visit in July 1915, followed by her family’s cottage-building in 1916. She described early summer homes around Saint James, Nomad’s mill and store, island businesses and services, the former railroad, High Island produce visitors, the Kansas and other mail connections, and a harbor organized around fishing tugs, net houses, docks, and fish shipments. She also remembered the seasonal isolation created by ice and the shift from commercial fishing and lumbering toward later summer residence.
Evidence and limits
This is a valuable first-person local retrospective, but it is not a complete property, business, vessel, census, or fisheries register. Statements such as the approximate number of fish boats, the Smithsonian model attribution, and the sequence of early cottages and businesses remain source-qualified memories until corroborated by independent records.

- Helen Hoffman Collar says 1964 was her fiftieth summer after first visiting in July 1915. Her retrospective describes a family cottage on the North/Back Beach, early summer homes, Nomad, the lumber mill and railroad, island stores and services, High Island produce sellers, the Kansas mail-and-passenger boat, harbor fishing tugs and net houses, mail interruptions, and the transition from commercial fishing and lumbering toward seasonal residence. It is a first-person retrospective, not a complete property, business, vessel, census, or fisheries register; individual recollections and reported counts require corroboration.data1 · beaver-island-archive · beaver_beacon · 1964-09_Beaver-Beacon
