Summary
The July 1968 Beaver Beacon’s “Ten Years Ago” column recounts an overnight search for Ed and Mrs. Murray near Lake Geneserath on June 25–26, 1958. The couple had gone fishing from a rented cabin, left their car at the north-arm Conservation Public Fishing Site, and walked into the woods. They became disoriented, and Mr. Murray eventually left Mrs. Murray beside a fire while he walked to the airport and obtained a rental car. Bud McDonough and Archie LaFreniere searched the town and lake; by 5:00 a.m. a search party had been arranged and the Coast Guard and Karl Kuebler had been alerted. The Murrays returned to the village, received medical aid from Dr. Luton for shock and exposure, and later recovered.
Evidence and limits
The printed “Ten Years Ago” heading supports deriving the June 1958 date from the July 1968 issue, but this remains a retrospective community account. It does not provide a contemporaneous search log, map, Coast Guard report, medical record, weather record, exact cabin or trail location, or complete participant list. The reported fishing-site and airport locations are retained as the source’s historical setting, not as proof of current facilities or routes.
Open questions
- Do Coast Guard, township, hospital, or contemporaneous newspaper records document the search?
- Which cabin, road, and north-arm fishing-site records identify the reported locations in 1958?
