Beaver Island Museum Week, 1980

Summary

The 1980 Beaver Island Museum Week is, on the held evidence, the first Museum Week the Beaver Island Historical Society ever held. The Society’s own November 1980 Curator-Director’s Report, signed by Shirley Gladish, lists among that year’s “firsts” — alongside a new Marine Museum and the Society’s first CETA-funded youth program — “an experimental Museum Week.” No exact July dates survive in the held record, but the August 1980 issue already treats the week as a planned summer fixture that the Beaver Island Sweet Adelines had been invited to sing at.

Program

Per Gladish’s report, the week included a book sale, a musical evening, a dog show, an “Author’s night,” a lecture on geology, a box supper and street dance, and “daily craft demonstrations” on the Print Shop Museum’s front porch, together with a continuing photographic exhibit. The season closed on Labor Day weekend with an open house at the Print Shop and a drawing for a Beaver Island quilt (won by Diane Gustin). Gladish singles out three CETA youth workers, Tom Cole, Paul Cole and Duane Mooney, for their help that year, though not specifically for Museum Week.

Neither held source gives calendar dates for the 1980 week; “1980” here marks the year, not a specific span. The November report is a retrospective year-end account rather than a contemporary program schedule, so the order and staging of individual events (whether the dog show and dance were on different days, for instance) is not established. No attendance figures or financial results specific to Museum Week are given for this year (Gladish’s report gives overall Society finances only in terms of the Volume II publication debt, not a Museum Week total).
