Summary

The 1986 Beaver Island Museum Week ran July 14-19, with a maritime-heritage emphasis planned around a Smithsonian loan of a model of the local fish tug Margaret McCann. The October annual meeting reported $844 in Museum Week donations and $350 from the dance, and committee organizer Ann Broder called the week a success overall.

Program

Joe Cunningham provided the music this year; events, including at least some lectures, were moved to the new Community School gym rather than their usual setting. A dance was held July 19 in a rented hall. Board minutes record an intent to expand the tour concept in future years to include island institutions such as the church, school and medical center, on top of the established house-tour format. Music on the Porch continued as a named program this year, following the prior year’s note that it had run too long in 1985.

Evidence limits

The Smithsonian’s Margaret McCann model loan, planned in the May board minutes for display “from May to October,” is not confirmed as actually delivered and exhibited during Museum Week itself; the October annual meeting reports it was not borrowed that year “because of the high price of shipping and insuring it,” so the maritime-heritage centerpiece announced in May did not, in fact, arrive as planned. No detailed day-by-day program survives for 1986 comparable to 1984’s or 1985’s published calendars; the minutes describe planning and after-the-fact totals rather than an executed schedule.

Open questions

  • Which hall hosted the July 19 dance – the same Holy Cross Parish Hall used in 1983 and 1984, or a different venue? The minutes refer to it only as “the Hall.”
  • Was the church/school/medical-center institutional tour idea, proposed at the October 1986 annual meeting, ever carried out in a later year?
