Summary
The 1991 Beaver Island Museum Week, its “12th Annual” per coordinator Floss Frank’s own August Beacon recap, ran July 15-20 with a maritime-heritage theme built around the schooner replica “Madeline” and the St. James Harbor Lighthouse.

An open house at the St. James Harbor Lighthouse and tours of the schooner replica “Madeline” (which, in its original form, carried freight and settlers to Beaver Island in the 1800s and later carried off the routed Mormons); a Steve Harold lecture, “The Ship and the Light”; Music on the Print Shop Porch, “as has been the custom for the last ten years,” featuring Claudia Schmidt, Kevin White, Michael Moore and Cindy Gillespie; Dr. Jim Gillingham’s Live Reptile Show and a spider talk by CMU graduate student Dave Clark; a chartered “Around the Island” cruise on the Voyageur, narrated by Helen Collar and Phil Gregg; two evenings of local-history video, one led by Robert Cole (the Beaver Island District Library’s Oral History project) and one by Jack Cull (showing his own films of island life since the early 1940s); an Art Show at the Community School organized by Ray Denny; the Protar House open, hosted by Antje Price; a Pet Show and a Treasure Hunt; and a Native American pottery demonstration by Frank Ettawageshik.
Evidence limits
Coordinator Floss Frank’s recap is a first-person account naming many participants but no financial total or attendance count for 1991. It notes the next year’s dates and theme (Columbus Quincentenary) as already announced, which the 1992 edition of this event confirms occurred as a “Your Beaver Island Connection”-style themed year only from 1993; the 1992 program as actually held does not appear, on the held record, to have carried a Columbus theme (see the 1992 edition).
Open questions
- Was the announced 1992 Columbus-anniversary theme carried out, modified, or dropped? The 1992 held sources do not describe a Columbus theme.
