Summary
The 1993 Beaver Island Museum Week, themed “Your Beaver Island Connection,” ran July 19-24 with a day devoted to each of the Native American, French, Irish and Mormon threads of island history, closing with a ticketed pub concert by the Chicago-based Irish group Arranmore. It was, per the August recap, the Society’s “best ever, financially and attendance-wise” edition to date, and the first year admission was charged for most events.
Program
Monday: a drum-making exhibit and Music on the Porch. Tuesday: Native American basketmaking and “The Native American Connection” program at the Church Hall. Wednesday: a Bishop Baraga commemorative ceremony and “The French Connection.” Thursday: a Nature Walk, a noon picnic at Protar’s Home marking the 100th anniversary of Protar’s arrival on Beaver Island, and “The Irish Connection.” Friday: a Nature Walk, Dr. Jim Gillingham’s Reptile Show, and “The Mormon Connection.” Saturday: the Arranmore concert, the week’s grand finale. An Art Fair ran Wednesday through Saturday. Fees were $2 per event or $20 per family for the week; the picnic and Art Fair were free.
Evidence limits
The recap credits the thematic format’s popularity and financial success in general terms but does not itemize attendance or receipts by day; the “best ever” claim is the Society’s own characterization, not an audited figure. Which specific speakers led each themed “Connection” evening (beyond the overall day-by-day structure) is not given in the held issues.
Open questions
- Who spoke or performed at each themed “Connection” evening (Native American, French, Irish, Mormon)? The schedule notices name the sessions but not the presenters.
