Summary
Museum Week 2003 ran from a Sunday house party on July 13 through Saturday, July 19, with the core weekday program running Monday the 14th to Saturday the 19th. A full day-by-day schedule survives in the Beacon’s July web edition, followed by an August recap.
Program
Sunday: a House Party at the Bonner Farm opened the week. Monday, July 14: master beader Dan Chingwa on the history and techniques of Native American beadmaking (2:00), and Music on the Porch (8:00), with sixteen acts highlighted by the Community Choir. Tuesday, July 15: Antje Price at the Protar Home, and Native American author/historian Simon Otto on Indian history, culture, and lore (8:00). Wednesday, July 16: a Nature Walk for Adults; Mary Blocksma signing her new book What’s on the Beach on the Print Shop porch; the Ray Denny Memorial Art Show opening at the BICS Gym, staffed by Lois Sowa and Laura Pratt; and Robert Cole presenting recordings and conversation from his Oral History project (8:00). Thursday, July 17: a Nature Walk for Kids; Jim Gillingham’s “Wonderful World of Amphibians and Reptiles” (2:00); and a costumed re-enactment of “Life in a Straights-area Lighthouse” by GLLKA members MaryAnn Moore and Madeleine Jones (8:00), who also described GLLKA’s restoration of the St. Helena Light as a preview of the hoped-for Whiskey Point Light project. Friday, July 18: another Nature Walk for Kids; Lighthouse Tales for Children in costume; and Pinky’s Bingo Game (8:00). Saturday, July 19: the Pet Show at noon on the Print Shop porch; Antje Price at the Protar Home again; and a concert by the Conklin Ceili Band, with an Arranmore Twinning Celebration — slides and stories orchestrated by Cindy Gillespie, Tara Palmer, and Paul Cole — during intermission.
Evidence limits
Both the schedule and the recap are held only in the Beacon’s web edition, not the OCR newspaper corpus, for this year; no separate print-issue coverage was checked against them. The recap does not give attendance or fundraising totals for 2003, unlike several adjacent years.
Open questions
- What was the Arranmore Twinning trip being celebrated at Saturday’s concert? The recap references it as already familiar to readers without explaining its origin in this article’s held sources.
