Summary

The Beaver Island Music Festival’s second held edition ran July 16-17, 2004, on “Danny Burton’s Place” – the same family property that hosted the 2003 founding gathering, per the festival’s later official retrospective (see Beaver Island Music Festival). Three 2004 Beaver Beacon issues (May, June, and July) carry a calendar listing and near-identical ad text for this edition; no 2004 issue narrates the event after the fact, so this article records only what was announced.123

Program

The June and July 2004 ads list the same lineup, “on 2 stages”: simplicity (described as “from detroit”), Sparkle Motion, Prisoners of Paradise, Justin Rock, Cass Avenue Ramblers, Beaver Island Boys, Gretchen Wolff, Ernie Douglas, and Chris Kurzawa.23 Act-name capitalization is inconsistent between the two ads (e.g. “Prisoners of paradise” vs. “Prisoners of Paradise”) and is quoted here as printed in each source rather than normalized.

Admission was advertised at $8.00 per day or $15.00 for the weekend, described as “rain or shine,” with overnight camping available at the site. Tickets and details were directed to simplicitymusic.com and jambasetickets.com, or by calling Danny or Carol Burton.23

The July 2004 ad text carries the label “DANNYVILLE 2” beside the event name and dates – possibly a numbered nickname for the encampment consistent with 2003 having been a first “Dannyville,” though no source read for this article states that explicitly.

Evidence limits

All three held 2004 sources are announcements (a calendar listing and two near-duplicate advertisements), not reports of what actually took place. No 2004 issue of the Beaver Beacon read for this article describes attendance, confirms which announced acts performed, or gives a post-event account. The lineup above is therefore the announced program, not a verified roster of performers who appeared.

Open questions

  • Did every advertised act perform, and were any of the “more acts to be announced” (per the May listing’s phrasing) added later in the season?
  • What does “Dannyville 2” refer to, and is it evidence that 2003 was informally called “Dannyville 1” or “Dannyville”?
  • No attendance or fundraising figures were found for this year, unlike later editions.
