Summary

The Beaver Island Music Festival’s fifth held edition ran July 20-21, 2007, “on the Beaver Island Music Festival grounds.” A May/June 2007 advertisement gives the full announced lineup; an October 2007 retrospective column reviews the performances in detail; and a December 2007 report gives attendance figures and announces the following year’s dates.123

Program

The advertised lineup was: Blue Dahlia, Boodlers (the retrospective identifies this act as Doghouse Boodlers), D’Carlo, Dirt Road Logic, Goldmine Pickers, James Ellsworth & The Dynasorrows, L.S. Banjo, Paul Lamb & The Harperwoods Heroes, Prisoners of Paradise, Ragbirds, Rootstand, and Simplicity.1

The October 2007 retrospective column reviews, in order: Blue Dahlia (“from the Kalamazoo area,” flutes and strummed acoustics with percussion), the Goldmine Pickers (“traveled all over the US of A and Europe,” traditional bluegrass and folk), Prisoners of Paradise (named as “Beaver Island’s own super-talented super group, headed by the Croswhites, Joddy and Stryder, and Denny Richards”), PAUL and the Harper Woods’ Heroes (blues rock), The Ragbirds (“the darlings of last year’s festival”), Rootstand (noted as recording a new record on the Island that week “at Joddy’s studio”), James Ellsworth and the Dynasorrows (“all the way from Indiana”), and L. S. Banjo, described as “the first true garage band to play at the festival.”2

A separate pre-festival fundraiser, the “Golden Beaver Bash” on June 1, 2007, featured Back Forty, Sowa Brothers, Ed Palmer & Friends, and Ernie Douglas, also on the festival grounds.1

By December 2007, the festival reported 620 total day and weekend visitors, 250 musicians (including Doghouse Boodlers and Prisoners of Paradise), vendors, and volunteer staff, and more than 30 children age 12 and under – described as an increase over prior years. Crazy Richard the Mad Juggler is named as a highlight for children. The report states BIMF has historically raised funds for the Beaver Island Music Fund, Beaver Island EMS, the Beaver Island Fire Department, and the BICS Music Program, and announces the “6th annual” festival for July 18-19, 2008 – an ordinal consistent with a 2003 founding.3

Evidence limits

The retrospective column’s review breaks off (the held OCR text is interrupted by an unrelated advertisement) after describing L.S. Banjo’s set, so its account of the rest of Saturday’s program is not held in this article’s sources. Which acts named only in the May/June ad (D’Carlo, Dirt Road Logic, Simplicity) actually performed is not independently confirmed by the retrospective, which does not mention them by name in the portion held here.

Open questions

  • Does the unread remainder of the October 2007 retrospective (after L.S. Banjo) name Rootstand, Simplicity, D’Carlo, or Dirt Road Logic as having performed?
  • Is “Boodlers” in the ad the same act as “Doghouse Boodlers” named in the December report? Both are treated here as the same act, following the December issue’s fuller name.
