Summary

The Beaver Beacon’s February and March 1963 issues describe a two-day island program: a Saturday, March 16th party at the Shamrock with a Wisconsin band playing Irish jigs and a late lunch, followed by a Sunday, March 17th dinner served by the Holy Cross Altar Society and a movie.

Program

Saturday, March 16th: a party at the Shamrock with music from “O’Mally’s Band” of Wisconsin (described as returning from the previous year) and a late-night or early-morning lunch. Sunday, March 17th: “a real old fashioned dinner” served at 5:00 p.m. by the ladies of the Holy Cross Altar Society, followed by a movie (“Irish, of course, we hope,” per the Beacon’s editorializing).

Evidence limits

Both sources are announcements/program notices published before the celebration; no April 1963 follow-up report on the island program’s outcome, attendance, or proceeds was found in the held issue (the April 1963 issue instead reports on the separate Chicago and Lansing party outcomes). The Sunday dinner’s venue is not named in the source; only the Saturday party’s Shamrock location is explicit, so took_place_at lists only structure/shamrock-inn-1945 and the dinner location is left unresolved in prose. The Chicago and Lansing parties described in the same issues are separate events from this island program; Chicago is tracked in St. Patrick's Party for Holy Cross Church, Chicago.

Open questions

  • Did an outcome report for the island’s 1963 program appear in a later issue not checked here?
  • What venue hosted the Sunday Altar Society dinner?

  3. Gives the full program: "The celebration will start on the Island on Saturday March 16th with a party at the Shamrock. O'Mally's Band from Wisconsin will play many an Irish jig for those attending and a lunch will be served late in the evening or should we say early in the morning. On Sunday a real old fashioned dinner will be served at 5:00 p.m. by the ladies of the Holy Cross Alter Society. Following this a movie will be presented." The same issue separately details the Chicago (American Legion Post #792) and Lansing parties, both distinct events.
