On March 9, 2005, the Charlevoix County Board of Commissioners adopted a workplace smoking ban by a 4–2 vote. The October Beaver Beacon later reported that the Northwest Michigan Community Health Agency had reworked the ban amid a lawsuit, with proposed changes to employee-count and vehicle provisions.
