Summary
During its 1898 fall lake-trout egg-collection work, the U.S. Fish Commission did not attend the fisheries at Beaver Island because it expected local trout to spawn after 1 November. The report calls the island one of the most productive sections in past years, but does not quantify that description.
Evidence and limits
This is a decision and observation record, not a successful collection event. The report later relays fishers’ letters that large numbers of spawning fish had appeared in late October and says future collection might be possible. It does not show that the agency collected eggs at Beaver Island in 1898 or later, nor does it provide landings, catch, people, vessel, or exact fishing-ground data.
