Summary

Powers’ Do It Best Hardware is a hardware store on Main Street in Saint James, trading since at least 1998 and, as of August 2026, still open. The Beaver Beacon shows it operating a lumberyard as well as a retail store, sharing premises with the Beaver Island Gift Shop, and supplying materials to township building projects. The business was offered for sale in 2022; no held source records the outcome.

Current operation

The store trades at 26259 Main Street and was listed and open as of August 2026.1 Whether ownership changed after the 2022 offering is not established by any held source.

History

The earliest held Beacon mentions are from 1998. By 2003 the firm was running a lumberyard alongside the store: the Homecoming calendar for that August lists a “Lumbarr Yarrd Party” at Powers’ Lumberyard, and the following month’s issue describes about two hundred people gathered “from Jeff Powers’ lumberyard” for an evening of music.23 That item is the only held source naming a principal of the business.

May 2011 advertising shows the hardware store and the Beaver Island Gift Shop trading together as one concern, offering hardware and gift goods, plants and trees, grills, lawnmowers and wheelbarrows.4 The firm also supplied community construction: in June 2013 it “had the low bid for the Resale Shop materials.”5 Visiting crews in 2008 are reported complimenting the store “as being equal to their favorite hardware back in Rockford.”

In February 2022 the business was offered for sale with its inventory and a lease of retail space in the Main Street building complex.

Evidence and limits

No held source gives the founding date, the family’s entry into the trade, or the building’s history; 1998 is simply the earliest surviving mention in the held Beacon run, not a start date. The held run ends in 2014, so the twelve years to 2026 rest on the 2022 sale posting and a commercial listing. No deed, licence or assumed-name filing has been consulted.
