Summary

The Wild Strawberry Cafe is an eating house at 38240 Michigan Avenue in Saint James on Beaver Island, established in 2024 and trading as of August 2026. It occupies the premises next to McDonough’s Market built in 1996–97 for the Dalwhinnie Bakery & Deli. It carries the largest review population of any restaurant in the settlement and one of the thinnest documentary records in this archive: it post-dates every newspaper the collection holds.

Current operation

The cafe serves breakfast daily, with rotating lunch and dinner specials, and its own website carries “Est. 2024.”¹ Its contact page gives the address as 38240 Michigan Avenue and places it “next to McDonough’s Market.”² It was listed and open as of August 2026.³

One commercial listing gives a different address, 38228 Freesoil Road.³ The business’s own statement is preferred here.

The premises

The building the cafe occupies has a documented history that the cafe itself does not. The Beaver Beacon reported in November 1996 that a 2,400-square-foot bakery and delicatessen was under construction beside McDonough’s Market, built by Gary Damstra, and that the market would henceforth be found “just north of Dalwhinnie.”⁴ The Dalwhinnie Bakery & Deli opened there on 21 June 1997.

The cafe’s own address and its description of itself as “next to McDonough’s Market” match that building exactly.² On that agreement of address and position this record treats the cafe as occupying the former Dalwhinnie premises, which makes it the second business in a purpose-built house rather than the first occupant of a new one. The cafe does not say so itself, and no held source states the succession directly, so the identification is probable rather than established.

Evidence and limits

Everything about the business comes from its own website and one commercial listing, both retrieved on 14 August 2026. Nothing in the held corpus mentions the cafe: a search of the newspaper OCR for its name returns only references to the wild strawberry plant, including a 1981 reminiscence of eating them west of Lake Geneserath. No ownership is established. Secondary aggregator pages name owners and state flatly that the cafe was formerly Dalwhinnie Bakery & Deli; neither claim appears on the business’s own pages or in any primary source held here.

This is the expected shape for a business younger than the archive’s newspaper coverage. What can be said with confidence is about the building, not the trade — the reverse of every other business record in this collection.
