History
The Shamrock, 1973–1983
Archie LaFreniere sold the Shamrock Bar in April 1973, after 36 years, to Barbara Becker Anderson, of Grand Blanc, and her cousins Cyril and Vera Jean Timsak, of Muskegon — printed in the Beacon as “Cyril and Vera Jean (Jim) Jimsak.” The notice named her as the daughter of Buzz and Betty Anderson, who had moved to the island the previous year and remodeled the bar’s interior before the new owners took over. Classified advertising through 1973 and 1974 paired her name with Tim (Cyril) Timsak’s under variant spellings, and a March 1974 column on a Bartenders School and Licensed Beverage Holders Conference in Lansing called them “your hosts Barb and Jim.” A 1982 Beacon profile of the Timsaks, written after they had moved permanently to the island to become harbor master and school janitor (Tim) and Medical Auxiliary president (Vera), states that the couple “decided to move here permanently when asked by Barb Beckers to join her in buying the Shamrock Bar,” and that “they were half owners of the bar for about a year.” A November 2011 obituary for Timsak later resolved the advertising’s inconsistent names, stating that he sold his half-interest in the bar to “Barb and her parents, Buz and Betty Anderson” — matching the Beacon’s classified advertisements, which name Beckers alone from November 1974 on.
Beckers ran the Shamrock through the 1970s and into the early 1980s. She reported the island’s first Fly-In since 1959 for the Beacon in October 1974 and the construction of the emergency-aircraft hangar that December, supplied golf accessories as prizes for the Fourth Annual Shamrock Open golf tournament in July 1978, and closed the bar for the season on March 29, 1980, marking the occasion with a surprise birthday party for her mother, Betty Anderson. In January 1983 she wrote up a Santa Claus visit to the bar and the new island bank branch, and a January 1982 island-tour feature recapped that “Archie ran the bar for 35 years before its sale 10 years ago to Barb Beckers.” On March 17, 1983, the Shamrock changed hands again: Dr. and Mrs. Michael Macken bought it and hired Dick and Joyce Moreno to manage it, while Beckers “continue[d] to work, managing the kitchen.” A 2003 Beacon retrospective, looking back thirty years, still credited her by name: “Archie LaFreniere sold the Shamrock to Barb Beckers.”
Civic roles
Beckers was secretary-treasurer of the newly formed Beaver Island Business Association from its February 1975 organizing meeting, which set dues at $10 and met monthly for lunch at the Circle M. In March 1974 she was named the contact for a Medical Center building-fund drive, and that December the Beacon listed her among five nominees for the Civic Association’s Governing Board; on January 13, 1977, she was elected the Association’s treasurer, serving on a nine-member board under president Bill Wagner. In February 1981 she was appointed to the Beaver Island Community School Board to fill the vacancy left by Jewell Gillespie’s resignation, and she stood for election to keep the seat on June 14, 1982, against Billy McDonough; no source read here reports the result. While serving, she filed signed “Report from the School Board” columns for the Beacon in 1982, and separately reported for the Port St. James Property Owners Association in the same issues. She hosted the school’s senior dinner at the Shamrock for graduating seniors, their parents and faculty on May 26, 1982. A February 2005 retrospective identified her among current and former Beaver Island Community School Board members honored at a Hannahville–Beaver Island basketball game, with her total years of service recorded only as “Unknown # of Years.”
Family
Beckers’s parents, Orval “Buzz” and Betty (Kuhar) Anderson, both had their deaths reported in the Beacon. Betty, who had worked at the Shamrock for more than ten years, died in Cheboygan in November 1988; Buzz died at Beckers’s Cheboygan residence in December 1996. A Betty Anderson also served as treasurer of the Beaver Island Civic Association in 1974; the Beacon does not state outright that this is the same Betty Anderson, though the shared name, island residence and period make it probable.
Significance
Beckers’s tenure spans the Shamrock’s transition from a locally owned neighborhood bar to a physician-owned business, and her overlapping service on the Business Association, Civic Association, Community School Board and a property-owners association makes her one of the more broadly documented civic figures of Beaver Island’s 1970s–80s Beacon coverage, alongside her long-running proprietorship of one of the island’s few year-round businesses.
Evidence and limits
The 1973–75 notices, the 2011 Timsak obituary, and a 1982 Timsak profile together establish Beckers’s Shamrock ownership and the timeline of the Timsaks’ co-ownership; the 1983, 1988 and 1997 items establish the 1983 sale and continued kitchen work, and her parents’ deaths. None of the held sources gives Beckers’s own birth or death date, a marriage record, or the outcome of the June 1982 School Board election. The 1983 Central Michigan University donation notice records her full name as “Barbara Otterson Beckers” — the only source found, in the Beaver Beacon or elsewhere in the held corpus, to include “Otterson” — and this article does not determine whether it is a maiden name, a married name, or something else.
