Summary

Erwin E. Belfy Sr. (1892–1975) moved from Tomahawk, Wisconsin to Beaver Island in 1908, married Lenore Allers in 1910, fished commercially with his brother William before joining the Michigan Conservation Department in 1929, and worked for decades as assistant supervisor of commercial fishing and engineer of the Department’s Patrol Boat No. 1, retiring in 1968.

History

Before his conservation career, Erwin and his brother William A. Belfy commercially fished together with the tug Silver Star from 1915 to 1935; William’s own account, reprinted in a May 1966 Beacon tribute after his death, recalls “my brother, Erwin, a hired hand and I commercial fished with the tug ‘Silver Star.’” William’s obituary that same issue lists his survivors as including “a brother, Erwin of Charlevoix” — Erwin had moved to Charlevoix by 1938, per his own 1975 obituary.

Erwin joined the Michigan Conservation Department in 1929 at Escanaba. A June 1945 feature in the Charlevoix County Herald profiles the crew of Conservation Patrol No. 1 near Beaver Island and names “Erwin Belfy, assistant supervisor and first mate,” who “doubled at the Shamrock Inn… as aide to the bartender-proprietor, Richard LaFrangiere.” He moved to Charlevoix in 1938 and retired from the Department in 1968, having served as assistant supervisor of the commercial fishing division and engineer of Patrol Boat No. One — the same patrol vessel and the same “assistant supervisor” title recorded in 1945, twenty-three years into a single career on that boat.

He died January 17, 1975, at Charlevoix Area Hospital, after being a patient there since December 10, 1974. Services were held at Winchester Funeral Home on January 19, with interment in Brookside Cemetery, Charlevoix.

Significance

Belfy’s career links the island’s commercial-fishing economy of the 1910s–30s to the state conservation apparatus that regulated it from the late 1920s on, and his decades aboard the same patrol vessel make himself and his 1945 profile a rare mid-career snapshot bridging the two ends of a single obituary’s career summary.

Evidence and limits

Three episode-qualified records were merged here. The 1945 patrol-boat record and the 1975 obituary share an unusually specific occupational bridge: both name him “assistant supervisor” of the same Michigan Conservation Department commercial-fishing patrol operating the same vessel (Conservation Patrol No. 1 / Patrol Boat No. One), with the obituary’s 1929–1968 Department tenure fully containing the 1945 date. The 1966 Silver Star record is bridged by residence: William A. Belfy’s obituary names his surviving brother as “Erwin of Charlevoix,” matching Erwin Sr.’s move to Charlevoix in 1938, and William’s own reminiscence names his fishing partner and hired hand as “my brother, Erwin.” William’s obituary separately lists a son also named Erwin, “of Detroit” — a namesake nephew — but the tug co-ownership is attributed to the brother “of Charlevoix” in the same passage that lists the Detroit son separately, so the two are not conflated here. No single held source narrates all three episodes (commercial fishing with William, the 1945 patrol assignment, and the 1975 death) in one sentence, so this record remains probable rather than established.
