Summary

Erwin Charles “Erwin C.” Martin (1943–1997), son of Charles I. “Charlie” Martin, grew up in St. James, was an eleventh-grade honor-roll student at Beaver Island Grade and High School in 1960, and by 1963 managed the Beaver Island Telephone Company.

History

In December 1959 the Beaver Beacon reported that Erwin Martin had broken his arm for the second time while ice-skating, without giving an exact date or treatment record. Two months later, the February 1960 “Honor Roll” column listed him as an eleventh-grade student at Beaver Island Grade and High School. By October 1963, the “Telephone Anyone?” notice named Erwin C. Martin as manager of the Beaver Island Telephone Company, giving the company’s office and home telephone numbers; no later company record found here follows his tenure.

Significance

The three notices trace one island teenager from a schoolyard injury and an honor-roll listing into a named managerial role in the island’s telephone utility within three years — one of the fuller documented paths from school record to local employment in the Beacon corpus for this period.

Evidence and limits

Identity bridge. The Holy Cross Cemetery index lists exactly one Erwin Charles Martin, “aka Charles Erwin” (1943–1997), married to Alice Travis, son of Charles and Marion (McGinnis) Martin. This age (about 17 in the 1960 eleventh-grade notice, about 20 by the 1963 telephone-manager notice) and the shared St. James/Beaver Island setting across all three notices point to one person; no competing Erwin Martin appears in any source read for this article. The unusual full name and the consistent Martin family context are the bridge, not the surname alone.

No source read for this article gives his occupation history beyond the 1963 telephone-company notice, or the date and cause of his 1997 death.

Open questions

  • How long did Martin serve as telephone company manager, and what succeeded that role?
  • No source read for this article states the date or cause of his 1997 death.
