History

The Solle family was among several new households the Beacon welcomed to the Beaver Island Community School in September 1968.¹ By April 1970 Frank Solle was a member of the Beaver Island 4-H Flying Club, which traveled to a Charlevoix County 4-H achievement day in Boyne City and won a Blue Ribbon.² That club reorganized as the “Beaver Island Flying Club” in January 1971, with 15 teenage members meeting weekly under instructor Bill Welke; Solle was elected vice-president, alongside Dan Gillespie as president.³

That same spring, Solle wrote his entrance examination for North Central Michigan College on February 20, 1971 — identified there as “son of Dr. and Mrs. Joseph Christie” — and was named valedictorian of the Beaver Island High School graduating class, receiving the Reader’s Digest Association’s annual award for students showing promise of community leadership.⁴⁵ That August the Beacon‘s “College Notes” reported him attending North Central Michigan College in Petoskey.⁶ In October 1972 he was confirmed at Holy Cross Church alongside Rhea Christie, consistent with the Christie household named as his parents the year before.⁷ The following August he performed in Acts 1 and 2 of the Beaver Island Players’ first summer production, Plaza Suite.⁸
