Gladys L. Schnaudigel (née Spangler, 1904–1992), widow of Frank Schnaudigel, was the beneficiary of a March 1972 Beaver Island benefit supper and, two years later, was elected supervisor of Peaine Township.

History

On March 22, 1972, a Beaver Island pancake supper raised more than $250 for Frank and Gladys Schaudigel, with the accompanying thank-you notice spelling the surname “Schmaudigel”; no source read here gives the medical or other circumstance behind the benefit. Frank Schnaudigel died later that year, and the October–November 1972 “Frank Schnaudigel Passes” notice names his surviving wife as the former Gladys Spangler. Two years later, the November 1974 “Election Results” notice lists Gladys Schnaudigel as Peaine Township supervisor, without a vote total or term.

Her election to Peaine Township supervisor two years after a community benefit supper for her and her ailing or widowed household places one woman on both sides of the island’s mutual-aid and civic-governance record within a few years of each other.

Both notices agree on the married surname (in its “Schaudigel”/“Schmaudigel”/“Schnaudigel” spelling variants), the Beaver Island setting, and the spouse Frank Schnaudigel; a Beaver Island death-index profile independently supplies the exact birth date (April 4, 1904) and death month (May 1992) for a Gladys L. Schnaudigel of Beaver Island. No competing Gladys Schnaudigel appears in any source read for this article, so the 1972 benefit and 1974 election notices are treated as one woman. “Schaudigel,” “Schmaudigel,” and “Schnaudigel” are retained as source spellings of one surname rather than separate identities.
