History

The February 1960 Beacon names Grace Nackerman as one of three directors elected to the Beaver Island Civic Association board at its January 7 meeting, and a further notice records her re-election in 1962. In December 1974 the paper reports her as a Little Traverse Hospital patient recovering from cataract surgery, home again with a check-up planned in two weeks.

Significance

The Civic Association directorship places her among the small group of islanders who ran the Association’s public-facing governance in this period.

Evidence and limits

The Holy Cross Cemetery index lists exactly one Grace M. (Campbell) Nackerman (1906–1993), married to Frank J. Nackerman — the only Nackerman of that given name in the index — and both the 1960/1962 Civic Association notices and the 1974 hospital notice were independently matched to this same cemetery entry before the merge, giving the same distinctive name and lifespan as the bridge. No single source narrates both the directorship and the hospital stay together, so the merge rests on the shared, unique cemetery identity rather than a sentence connecting the two episodes directly.
