Hubert McCauley was a Beaver Island Community School student active in basketball, drama, and school events through the mid-1950s, and graduated with the class of 1956.

History

The Beaver Beacon tracked Hubert McCauley through his final two years of high school. In early 1955 he captained a Holy Cross Hall basketball tournament team nicknamed “Hubert’s Tramps,” which finished undefeated, and took the title role in the senior class play “Miss Jimmy” that April, performing in his fifth school production. That May, he served with Roland Cull on the Junior Committee arranging a visiting group of St. Mary’s students from Lake Leelanau. In January 1956 he worked the hand pump during a fire at the home of Daniel P. "Turner" Boyle and Maggie Boyle, staying “until there were no more calls for water” while a student bucket brigade fought the blaze. He appeared on the February 1956 Honor Roll and provided comic commercials at that spring’s St. Patrick’s Day program. The June 1956 Beacon names him, alongside Roland Joseph Cull, Rosemary McDonough, and Thelma Schmidt, among that year’s Beaver Island Community School graduates — the direct, contemporaneous record for the graduation a later 1961 retrospective also reports.

Significance

Hubert McCauley’s own record is a small one, a single graduating class’s worth of school and civic mentions, but the name-collision question it raises is a useful illustration of how easily this archive could merge generations of an island family sharing a given name. A February 1997 Welke family retrospective independently documents a married “Hubert and Kitty McCauley” hosting Detroit family friends in 1934, twenty-two years before this article’s subject graduated high school; that older Hubert McCauley’s wife’s name matches the “former Kitty Floyd” named as widow in the 1962 Pentwater obituary, making it probable that Beaver Island’s records hold at least two, and possibly three, distinct men named Hubert McCauley across the twentieth century.

Evidence and limits

This record is deliberately not merged with the “Hubert McCauley of Pentwater, Michigan” reported dead on July 19, 1962 in that August’s Beacon obituaries, survived by a wife, the former Kitty Floyd, and six children. A marriage and six children within about six years of an 18-year-old’s high school graduation is a tight but not impossible timeline; more significant is that a “Hubert McCauley” is separately reported attending the 1978 Beaver Island St. Patrick’s Party in Chicago, sixteen years after the 1962 death notice. A February 1997 Welke family retrospective adds a third data point: a married “Hubert and Kitty McCauley” hosted the Welke family as Detroit-area friends on Beaver Island in 1934 — a date that rules out this article’s subject, who would not yet have been born, and whose wife’s name, Kitty, matches the 1962 Pentwater widow’s maiden identification as “the former Kitty Floyd.” This article reads the 1934 host and the 1962 decedent as probably one older man, and treats him as a separate, third Hubert McCauley from the 1956 graduate documented here, without asserting the 1978 Chicago attendee is either of them. Irish naming customs on this island reuse given names within families repeatedly, which is exactly the condition under which different men of the same name are most easily mistaken for one, or for two when there may be three.

Open questions

  • Is the 1956 graduate the same man reported at the 1978 Chicago party, the same as the older, married Hubert McCauley documented in 1934 and probably in 1962, or a third man distinct from both?
  • Who was “Bernedine McCauley,” named alongside Hubert in the 1978 list?
  • What is Hubert McCauley’s relationship, if any, to the McCauley family descended from Conal and Mary Gallagher McCauley documented elsewhere in this archive, or to the older, married Hubert and Kitty McCauley who hosted the Welke family in 1934? No source read here states one.
