Summary

James Napper Tandy Gallagher was an Arranmore family ancestor whose unusual name was explained in a 1972 Beaver Beacon account. The story says a priest aboard a French vessel baptized him on Arranmore and Napper Tandy acted as godfather.

The September correction draws the identity boundary, and it matters: James drowned off Arranmore before the family left and never came to Beaver Island. Do not merge this record with Beaver Island men named James Gallagher, or with the historical Irish republican Napper Tandy himself.

Evidence and limits

The held source is a later family account reprinted from the Donegal Democrat, followed by a correction from Clementine McCauley. It does not establish James’s birth or death dates, the precise year of the baptism, the vessel’s complete identity, or a civil genealogy.
