Mike Cull is named as one of the people who made the Emerald Isle delivery trip from Sturgeon Bay to Beaver Island in April 1955. A Beaver Island Net retrospective also identifies a Mike Cull as operating a fishing tug, supplying a probable fisherman occupation but not a complete civil identity or ferry role.12

Evidence and limits

This record is deliberately kept separate from Michael Cull, the island’s best-documented Mike Cull, a commercial fisherman born in 1885 who would have been about 69 in April 1955. No source read here states outright that the delivery-trip passenger and the fisherman are the same man, so this article does not assume the bridge. At the same time, no source documents any other adult named Mike Cull on the island in this period — the fisherman’s own 1964 obituary names four sons (Ray, Roland, Jack, Larry) and none is called Mike — and the fisherman remained professionally active at the harbor as late as 1960, when he was appointed harbor master at 75. The absence of a documented alternative “Mike Cull” is circumstantial evidence for, not against, the identification; it is recorded here as an open question rather than resolved either way.
