Summary

Rose J. Greene Connaghan (1926–2020) raised at least four children with her husband, Jack Connaghan, on a farm in the country on Beaver Island, and served as Peaine Township treasurer, named in a November 1974 election-results notice, and later as president of the Holy Cross Altar Society.

History

The Beaver Beacon tracked the Jack and Rose Connaghan household continuously from the mid-1950s. Their son Stephen Michael was born October 8, 1955; a second son, Gerald Morriss, was born and baptized at Holy Cross Church in October 1958; and the family included at least two more sons, Tony and Eddie, named in later hospital and graduation notices, along with a daughter, Kimberly, who appears as a flower girl in a 1971 wedding notice. In November 1958 a house fire at “Jack Connaghan’s home in the country” did extensive interior damage; the Beacon reported the family caught it in time because “little Tony, their son,” woke warned by the smoke, and Jack and Rose put the blaze out with a garden hose. Steve Connaghan graduated from Beaver Island School in 1973 and Gerald Connaghan in 1976; Tony H. Connaghan graduated in 1971.

Jack Connaghan appears repeatedly in the Beacon’s 1950s community notices: among the island’s sailing crew in 1957, a beaver-trapping partner with Archie LaFreniere in the 1958 trapping season, a co-sponsor of that year’s Christmas dance with the Schmidts and Kathleen Gatliff, and a member of the island’s delegation to a Chicago St. Patrick’s Day party that March. In May 1958 the Beacon reported their son Steve, then 3, hospitalized in Charlevoix for a ruptured appendix and identified him as “the son of Jack & Rose Connaghan.”

Rose herself appears in the Beacon’s civic notices into the mid-1970s: named Peaine Township treasurer in the November 1974 election results, and elected president of the Holy Cross Altar Society in a January 1976 notice.

Evidence and limits

The newspaper’s Jack-and-Rose household notices bridge this record to the cemetery directory, which supplies the life dates. The office roster itself provides no vote total or term record. Whether Jack Connaghan — recorded elsewhere only as “Jack” — is the “John [Connaghan] of Charlevoix” named as a son of Catherine L. "Katie" Connaghan and her husband Hugh in Katie’s 1983 obituary is probable but not stated outright in any source read here; if so, Rose’s children would be grandchildren of a family descended from Arranmore Island, County Donegal.
