Summary

The A.D. Patchin was a steamer reported wrecked on Skilligallee Reef on 17 September 1850. A later historical report records that the schooner Abiah carried its boilers and locomotive to Buffalo in August 1852.

Evidence and limits

The surviving sources establish only the vessel type, loss date and reef, and a reported recovery-and-transport episode for the machinery. They do not yet support a builder, dimensions, official enrollment number, owner, route, cargo, people aboard, casualty total, or precise wreck coordinate.

  1. Calls A.D. Patchin a steamer, dates its wreck to 17 September 1850 on Skillagallee Reef near Beaver Island, and reports that its boilers and locomotive were carried to Buffalo aboard Abiah in August 1852. It does not establish the Patchin’s builder, dimensions, ownership, route, cargo, passengers, crew, casualties, or exact wreck position.

  2. Described in this archive: Northern Islander, 1850–1856.
The Strang newspaper retrospectively says a yawl had been lost from the wreck of the steamer Patchin and frozen on Hog Island shoals. It is evidence of a local post-wreck episode, not independent support for the date, reef, vessel specifications, or a full loss narrative.
